Hornets fall to Bobcats in season opener

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County started strong but was limited after halftime as Betsy Layne battled back from behind to win 68-58 in a boys’ high school basketball season opener on Thursday, Dec. 4.

The Hornets outscored the Bobcats 17-13 in the opening quarter and maintained a lead midway through the matchup. Magoffin County led 30-25 at halftime.

But Betsy Layne heated up offensively in the third quarter. The Bobcats moved ahead during the third quarter and entered the final period out in front 47-42.

Betsy Layne shot 54.0 percent (27-of-50) from the field.

Braydon Hall led Betsy Layne, scoring a team-high 20 points for the Bobcats.

Supplying a double-double for Betsy Layne, Ethan Lance scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Joining Hall and Lance in double figures for Betsy Layne, Isaiah Allen netted 12 points.

Finishing in single digits, Chandler Coleman (nine points), Cooper Justice (six points), Canyon Slone (four points) and Caden Hall (four points) were Betsy Layne’s additional scorers.

Walker Russell led Magoffin County, pouring in a game-high 29 points for the Hornets. Russell is a candidate for the 2025-26 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year Award.

Finishing near double figures for Magoffin County, Noah Gibson netted eight points.

The additional scorers for Magoffin County were Maycen Allen (five points), Carter Whitaker (four points), Parker Bowling (three points), Evan Reed (three points), Dason Burchett (two points) and Michael Trusty (two points).

Magoffin County is scheduled to host Betsy Layne for a late-season game Feb. 13, 2026.
