Hornets drop home game to Pike County Central

SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County and Pike County Central battled back and forth but the Hawks managed to pull away to win 70-56 in a boys’ high school basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 11.

Pike County Central shot 54.2 percent (26-of-48) from the field. The Hawks shot 42.9 percent (nine-of-21) from three-point range.

Pike County Central shot 56.2 percent (nine-of-16) from the free throw line.

Josh Du Toit scored a game-high 24 points to lead Pike County Central to the win.

Accompanying Du Toit in double figures for the Hawks, Jaylan Rigdon scored 19 points and Jaden Stewart netted 14 points.

Nearly reaching double figures for Pike County Central, Peyton Compton contributed nine points.

Aiding the Hawks offensively, Blake Adams and Justin Adkins chipped in two points apiece.

Magoffin County shot 35 percent (21-of-60) from the field. The Hornets drained four of 16 three-point field goal attempts, shooting 25 percent from beyond the arc.

Magoffin County shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free throw line.

The Hornets lost despite outrebounding the Hawks 34-22.

Flirting with a double-double, Ben Lafferty scored 19 points and pulled down down nine rebounds to lead the Hornets. Lafferty converted on two of four three-point field goal attempts.

Both Lafferty and Zane Whitaker nearly recorded double-doubles. Behind Lafferty, Whitaker scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Hornets.

Logging a double-double for Magoffin County, Aden Barnett netted 13 points and hauled in 11 rebounds.

Chipping in offensively for the Hornets, Grayson Whitaker and Walker Russell added six points and three points, respectively.

Magoffin County and Pike County Central aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2021-22 boys’ high school basketball season.
