Wireman reaches 1,000 rushing yards

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County freshman running back Blake Wireman reached 1,000 rushing yards in the ninth game of his high school football career.

Wireman surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in Magoffin County’s Class 3A, District 8 matchup versus Estill County on Friday, Oct. 25.

In less than 10 games, Wireman has rushed for nearly 1,200 yards.

The productive Wireman is averaging 131.6 rushing yards per game.

Through nine games, Wireman has rushed 170 times for 1,184 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Wireman is among the top freshmen running backs in the state. He also leads John DeRossett-coached Magoffin County in scoring.

Wireman is averaging 9.3 points per game.

Offensive linemen Caleb Perkins, Brayden Eads, Ben Rudd, Grady Cole, Caleb Lovely and Gavin Arnett have helped to pave the way for Wireman reaching the rushing milestone.

In addition to the offensive linemen, tight ends Trey Rudd and Brayden Standifer have provided blocking for the Hornets’ 1,000-yard rusher.

But Wireman isn’t alone when it comes to gaining yardage for the Hornets. Braxton Montgomery, Wireman’s fellow running back in Magoffin County’s backfield, has rushed 112 times for 574 yards and three touchdowns.

Chipping in on the ground, Magoffin County quarterback Dason Burchett has rushed 89 times for 190 yards and four touchdowns.

As a team, Magoffin County has rushed 386 times for 2,047 yards and 21 touchdowns in nine games.

Wireman will have an opportunity to add to his rushing total when Magoffin County visits Morgan County for its final game in the 2024 high school football season on Friday, Nov. 1.
