Masks optional at school

SALYERSVILLE – The Magoffin County School Board met in special session on Tuesday afternoon, amending the school calendar and voting on the mask mandate.

In the February 22 meeting, the board amended the calendar from days to hours, basically gaining approximately four days in the calendar and making the current last day of school Friday, May 27.

Director of Pupil Personnel Justin Bailey explained to the Independent that, in a typical year, students are required to attend at least 1,062 hours and 170 days.

“Due to the pandemic, the legislature waived the days requirement in the 2021 fall session,” Bailey explained.” Our calendar of 170 days equals approximately 1,090 hours. The last day of school was scheduled to be Friday, June 3. By amending the calendar from days to hours, we are able to adjust the calendar the difference between our current 1,090 hours and the required 1,062 – gaining approximately four days. That would make the current last day of school, Friday, May 27.”

Also in the Tuesday meeting, the board approved a change in policy regarding masks, making masks optional beginning February 23, but, due to federal regulations, face coverings continue to be required on all school buses.
