Michigan man arrested with more than 5 lbs. marijuana

SALYERSVILLE – A Michigan man was arrested in Magoffin County last Wednesday with more than five pounds of marijuana.

According to the arrest citation, on the morning of July 26, Kentucky State Police conducted a traffic safety checkpoint on the Mountain Parkway, stopping Joseph Michael McIntyre, 38, of Harper Woods, Michigan, after police smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

KSP asked McIntyre if there were any marijuana inside the vehicle and he stated there was a small amount in the center console. Police recovered a clear baggie with a small amount of marijuana from the center console, as McIntyre had stated, but upon searching the trunk, they found a gray tote with at least five pounds or more of suspected marijuana, packaged in a large transparent bag.

Police also seized a small amount of US paper currency. All evidence was photographed and collected on scene.

Upon further investigation, KSP discovered McIntyre did not have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Lemaster’s Towing removed the vehicle and McIntyre was transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, where he was released the next day, pending future court dates. He is currently facing charges of trafficking in marijuana more than 5 pounds, first offense, and no operator’s-moped license.

McIntyre is scheduled to be arraigned in the felony case on August 21 at 9 a.m. in the Magoffin County Justice Center.
