SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County fell behind early and couldn’t battle back as reigning champion Belfry pulled away to win 54-12 in the first round of the Class 3A UK Orthopaedics/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl at CAM Stadium on Friday, Nov. 20.
With the loss, Magoffin County ended the 2020 high school football season 3-4.
Belfry improved to 6-3 and advanced in the Class 3A Playoffs after notching the win.
Senior quarterback Lucas Litteral completed 11 of 25 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns for Magoffin County in the season-ending setback. Litteral, who completed at least one pass to five different receivers, threw three interceptions.
Aden Barnett led the Hornets in receiving, securing three receptions for 81 yards and one touchdown.
Brad Standifer hauled in four receptions for 62 yards for the Hornets.
Contributing to Magoffin County’s aerial attack, Grayson Whitaker reeled in a 56-yard touchdown pass reception.
Litteral led Magoffin County in passing and rushing. On the ground, Litteral rushed seven times for 27 yards. However, Magoffin County was limited when it came to moving the football on the ground.
Caleb Howard paced Magoffin County defensively, logging nine tackles and one tackle for a loss. Following Howard in the key defensive category, Nick Mollett posted four tackles while Jacob Howard, Levi Rudd and Christian Gamble added three tackles apiece.
The Magoffin County football program has turned its focus to the offseason following the loss.
