Hornets handle Golden Eagles

PAINTSVILLE — Aden Barnett poured in a game-high 41 points to lead Magoffin County over rival Johnson Central 82-74 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Monday, Feb. 12.

Magoffin County improved to 14-11 overall and finished 4-2 in the 57th District after registering the win.

Following the loss, Johnson Central dropped to 11-9 overall and finished 2-4 in the 57th District.

Barnett made nine of 10 foul shots in Magoffin County’s win.

Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach Scott Castle, swept Johnson Central in the two teams’ annual 57th District series.

Grayson Whitaker accompanied Barnett in double figures, scoring 23 points for the Hornets.

Narrowly missing double figures for Magoffin County, Zane Whitaker netted nine points.

Ethan Salyer added seven points for Magoffin County while Walker Russell and Noah Sammons chipped in two points apiece.

Russell paced Magoffin County inside, securing eight rebounds.

Austin Slone scored 31 points to pace the Golden Eagles. Slone made nine of 11 free throw attempts.

Joining Slone in double figures for Johnson Central, Brayden Shepherd scored 18 points and Kyle Rose netted 15 points.

Rounding out Johnson Central’s scoring, Andrew Meeks and Dawson Montgomery added five points apiece.
