Hornets roll past Blackcats

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County pulled away to defeat Prestonsburg 79-56 in the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Saturday, March 2.

The Hornets improved to 18-13 after registering the win. Magoffin County advanced in the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament.

As a result of the loss, Johnson Central dropped to 17-15. The loss eliminated Prestonsburg from the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament.

Magoffin County shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) from the field. The Hornets shot 51.7 percent (15-of-29) from three-point range.

Magoffin County shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free throw line.

Ethan Salyer scored 22 points to lead Magoffin County to the win. Salyer made six of seven three-point field goal attempts.

Joining Salyer in double figures for Magoffin County, Aden Barnett scored 16 points, Walker Russell posted 13 points and Grayson Whitaker delivered 12 points.

Contributing to the Hornets’ win, Zane Whitaker pushed in eight points, Noah Sammons contributed six points and Reed Meadows chipped in two points.

Nearly recording a double-double for Magoffin County, Whitaker secured 10 rebounds.
