SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to hold its first practice of the 2023 high school football preseason and the team is accepting new players.
The Hornets’ first practice is slated for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12.
In order to participate in the practice, a student-athlete must have a current sports physical on file.
Magoffin County conducted workouts throughout the offseason. The Hornets, under the direction of Coach John DeRossett, concluded offseason workouts prior to the start of the KHSAA Dead Period.
Much-improved Magoffin County is carrying momentum over into the preseason.
Magoffin County competes in Class 3A, District 8. The Hornets returned to the KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs in 2022. Magoffin County notched wins over Knott County Central, Bellevue, Floyd Central and rival Morgan County during the 2022 high school football season. The Hornets suffered losses to Breathitt County, Prestonsburg, Lawrence County, Belfry, Pike County Central, Clay County and Ashland in 2022. Following a loss to Ashland in the KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs, Magoffin County exited the 2022 high school football season 4-7.
Along with Magoffin County, Class 3A, District 8 includes Belfry, Lawrence County, Estill County and Powell County.
Magoffin County’s 2023 schedule includes games versus Montgomery County (Aug. 19), Lewis County (Aug. 25), Leslie County (Sept. 1), Russell (Sept. 8), Martin County (Sept. 15), Belfry (Sept. 22), Powell County (Sept. 29), Oct. 6 (Lawrence County), Estill County (Oct. 20) and Morgan County (Oct. 27).
Several experienced players are due back on the field for Magoffin County in the 2023 high school football season.
Prior to kicking off the 2023 high school football season, Magoffin County will host a pair of preseason scrimmages in August.
